1 min readWhen Jyoti Tank steps out of her tractor and walks through her farm in Mundra’s Mangra village, she beams with pride as she shows off a healthy, organic crop of varied gourd vegetables. Diminutive and slight, Jyotiben makes an unlikely farmer. Farming, she admits, was never in her plans. She was happy keeping home for her husband, Jitendra Tank, and looking after their son but her husband’s cancer diagnosis caught them unaware.
She put in all her time and money in his treatment and in between, tried to manager day-to-day farm matters. However, the cancer was at a late stage and he succumbed. Widowed so tragically, Jyoti refused to be intimidated by her new responsibilities and decided at once to do away with chemical fertilizers. On the advice of a friend, she approached Krushi Vigyan Kendra and the Adani Foundation in Mundra where she took a course in organic farming, learning how to prepare manure from earthworms and cow dung. She began farming her four acres of land with organic fertilizer she prepared herself. The foundation gave her the equipment she needed to get started, including sprinklers for drip irrigation. She joined a ‘Farmers Interest Group’ (FIG) through ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency), a government scheme.
Jyotiben’s small physical stature cannot mask her strength. She has made a success of her life, has educated herself to become a progressive farmer. She is an example to other women that anything, even against the most imposing odds, is possible.
Sarla Choudhary grew up in Nimoda, in Rajasthan’s Kota district, surrounded by cattle which her father reared. Over the years, she got to learn a lot about the animals. “Even when I got married, my father gave me a pair of cows and buffaloes as a gift,” she says. Sarla was determined to become financially independent and contribute to her family’s income. Now at fifty years of age, Sarla owns 25 cows and 25 buffaloes.
Looking after cattle has been a lifelong endeavour for her but it wasn’t always so. She started her business, almost in secret, hiding it from her disapproving family. “I started selling milk to nearby houses with the help of a milk vendor who I knew,” she says. The sale grew steadily and Sarla’s saving grew too. When her husband struggled to keep the family afloat on his earnings alone, she stepped in to help. Since then, her husband has stood by her business through thick and thin.
It was to the Adani Foundation, Sarla says, that she turned to when she needed to educate herself on how to expand her business. She says, “I learnt from courses at the Foundation about using the right kind of fodder, best practices in cattle breeding and artificial insemination.” The Foundation also stepped in when she needed medical assistance of veterinary doctors.
At present, Sarla employs five people who deliver 90 litres of milk in the nearby Adani township daily. Encouraged by the Foundation, she often addresses women in the area and shares her journey.
Surajlal Chandu Thakare is a 70-year-old farmer from village Chikhali, block Tirora, District Gondia, Maharashtra. Over the years, his wisdom in the area of agriculture has only grown. His 4-acre of agricultural land cultivates paddy, coarse cereals, etc. and is surrounded with 40 Palas (Butea Monosperma) trees. He did nurture the Palas trees, not truly knowing how beneficial it can be in gaining alternate income.
Adani Foundation found Lac cultivation to be gradually shrinking despite abundant availability of naturally growing Palas trees. In a bid to promote alternate livelihood source, they introduced Lac cultivation to farmers. Lac insects thrive on Palas trees(host trees), suck the plant sap and grow, all the while secreting Lac resins from their bodies. Producing Lac also has high economic value and demand in the market, majorly for making Lac ornaments.
Lac cultivation workshops were organised, to spread awareness among farmers who have Palas trees in their farms. Amongst the many who attended was Surajlal, who started scientific lac cultivation on available Palas trees. In the first year (2018), Surajalal inoculated 15 trees with 5 Lac seeds on each, in June. He followed all the improved techniques and steps taught to him for harvesting Lac. After six months, he found amorphous Lac growth. And this was just the beginning.
After 6-7 months, for harvesting the Lac from 35 trees, he employed three wage labourers. Despite some challenges and setbacks, he produced 100 kg of Lac from 35 trees and sold it in a major Lac market of Gondia, at a rate of Rs. 170/kg. Thus, with a minimum investment of Rs. 6,000-7,000, he earned Rs. 10,000/-.
Over the years, his earning from Lac cultivation has increased tremendously. He is so motivated that he now wants to plant more Lac host trees. His actions and words have encouraged other farmers in neighbouring villages to adopt Lac cultivation to earn income from trees readily available in their farms.
